(History):

With Dinah’s pedigree, it shouldn’t really be a shock to anyone what life has molded her to be.  Descended on her father’s side from generation, after generation, of GCPD Detectives; as a young girl she had every intention of joining the family ‘business’ when she got older.  It was not only blue that ran in her veins, however, and at the age of five she manifested the same meta-human power that her maternal grandmother, Dinah Drake possessed.  Such a potent power at such a young age might have been disastrous, but the original Black Canary trained her to use it with both force and restraint, advocating for harmonica lessons as a means of strengthening Dinah’s vocal cords and fine tuning her handle on them.  It wasn’t all that her grandmother did for her, though.  She provided protection, by using her connections as a former member of the Justice Society of America to keep attention away from her granddaughter.

Ever a tomboy, Dinah was more interested in fighting than playing dress-up, and after the loss of her mother to cancer when she was eight years old her focus was sharpened and encouraged as a healthy direction to channel her emotions.  Her ‘Uncle’ Ted Grant, former Heavy Weight Boxing Champion of the World, would take on her training in not just one form, but many.  Dinah’s childhood saw her spending most of her time at one of three ‘haunts’: Grant’s Gym, the Precinct with her father and their GCPD family, or in the basement of her grandparent’s bar, Pretty Bird’s, even after her grandmother’s death.

When her mother had died, there’d been no one to be angry at but Dinah was intelligent enough even then to see the futility in rage at a disease, and her grandmother had passed peacefully in her sleep.  At the age of fifteen, the girl also lost the father that she’d worshipped.  Murdered in the line of duty, and with the killer unknown, this time there was a concrete direction to aim her loss. She just didn’t know who it was.  Dinah redoubled her focus on training, and the rage and loss made her reckless and dangerous, prone to fly off the handle at classmates or loved ones.  She’d already begun to venture out at night, spurred by stories of her grandmother and ‘uncles,’ but also by whispers about the Batman.  It only picked up in frequency after she turned eighteen and lost her last remaining family anchor point.

While she was highly trained, and very, very good in a fight the frantic damage that she caused led to Batman taking her under his ‘wing’ like he would so many others in situations like hers.  Most were just his ‘children,’ who she would also help train. With his help, she uncovered just how corrupt her police ‘family’ was, and learned that it had been his partner who had pulled the trigger, ending Detective Lance’s life when he wouldn’t cooperate in the dirty politics that ruled instead of law.  That justice brought around a time the two had already discussed, however.  The presence of a metahuman, and a powerful one, would only bring similar down on Gotham and Dinah agreed to leave her home.  Traveling across the country to Star City to attend school, ostensibly to pick up a criminal justice degree and set herself back on her childhood path.  To do what her father, and his father, and his father before him had done.

In Star City, she couldn’t quite quit the vigilante gig and she met others like her that she fought along side and even helped train.  Clever and intelligent, it didn’t take Dinah long to figure out that legit detective work was not going to be for her.  Not knowing what she did of the corruption of the system, and so many years of exacting her own brand of justice.  She recognized the value in having the knowledge and connections, however and had intended to see it through to graduation. A phone call, telling her that Bruce Wayne, the Batman, had been murdered made her drop her classes and return to Gotham, the bar that she’d left in someone else’s care, and her new version of a family.
